The Oscar winner plays multiple roles in this adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 novel, while Susan Downey serves as one of the show’s executive producers

Robert Downey Jr. couldn’t do it without his wife!
The Iron Man star, 59, stepped out on the red carpet with his wife Susan Downey on Tuesday, April 9 to attend the premiere of his new HBO limited series, The Sympathizer.

The couple shined on the carpet outside the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles as they waited for a first look at the Oppenheimer star’s latest historical drama, for which he is both executive producer and actor. Susan, 50, also serves as one of the show’s executive producers.

Downey wore a Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello look that featured a tan suit with a dark, see-through shirt, while Susan wore a sleeveless ankle-length dress with flowery details.

Downey Jr. is no stranger to showering love and appreciation on his wife publicly, most recently calling her out during his Oscars acceptance speech. 

“I’d like to thank my veterinarian — I meant wife — Susan Downey over there. She found me, a snarling rescue pet, and loved me back to life. That’s why I am here. Thank you,” the actor said at the 2024 Oscars on March 10.

Based on author Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 novel of the same name, Downey Jr.’s newest series follows a French-Vietnamese spy (Hoa Xuande) for Communist forces during the Vietnam War’s final days. Downey Jr. plays multiple roles in the show alongside Sandra Oh and Fred Nguyen.

In addition to playing multiple roles and executive producing The Sympathizer, the Avengers actor showed even more commitment to his craft in October 2022 by allowing his two kids with Susan to help him shave his head for the show.

The couple’s daughter Avri and son Exton can be seen in the video mischievously running a hair trimmer over their dad’s head.

The Sympathizer will premiere on HBO on April 14.
