Mbappe: ‘Failure at Euro 2020 was like a slap in my face’

Striker Kylian Mbappe, captain of the France team, is determined to turn previous defeat into motivation to win the championship at Euro 2024.

“Losing at Euro 2020 was like a big slap in my face. It was a big stain on my career with the national team. Right now, I’m really hungry for revenge,” Mbappe shared on December 15. 6.

In 2021, Mbappe will attend the Euro for the first time. However, he did not score any goals in the three group stage matches and the match against Switzerland in the 1/8 round. It was Mbappe who missed the decisive penalty kick, causing France to lose to Switzerland with a score of 4-5.

Before and after Euro 2021, Mbappe and the French team achieved great successes: winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the 2022 World Cup final . In Qatar 2 years ago, this 25-year-old striker scored eight goals, winning Top scorer title, including an impressive hat-trick in the final against Argentina.

On June 17, the French team will begin their journey at Euro 2024 with a match against Austria. After that, Mbappe and his teammates will meet the Netherlands on June 21 and Poland on June 25 in Group D.

According to experts’ predictions, France is one of the top three candidates for the championship, next to England and Portugal: “There is no reason to avoid candidate status. We are one of the teams capable of winning the Euro,” Mbappe affirmed.

According to the French captain, being considered a candidate is a positive signal, but does not guarantee victory. Therefore, he wants the whole team to focus on their performance on the field: “The title of candidate only exists on paper. Football is not a paper game,” Mbappe emphasized.

Currently, the France captain has scored 47 international goals, becoming the third highest scorer in the team’s history, behind only Olivier Giroud with 57 goals and Thierry Henry with 51 goals.

Talking about his mission in the Les Bleus shirt, the Real Madrid rookie affirmed: “I always want to shine with the team. I am always proud and ambitious to leave a mark in the history of French football.” .”
