Erik ten Hag bought one of the worst-value-for-money players in the Premier League, then sold one of the best

Erik ten Hag has made some questionable decisions at the helm of Manchester United.

The Dutch manager and his coaching staff have gotten a lot wrong at Old Trafford during his time here, particularly when it comes to some transfers.

Don’t get us wrong, some have been fabulous. Rasmus Hojlund looks like a terrific player, Lisandro Martinez was an inspired pickup and Jonny Evans for free was sensational.

However, there have been some United are already beginning to regret, regarding incoming and outgoings.

Erik ten Hag’s two summer mistakes so far

Ten Hag’s first summer arrival was Mason Mount from Chelsea, who it’s safe to say hasn’t hit the ground running at Carrington.

One of Ten Hag’s summer departures was Teden Mengi. He was eventually sold this past summer after a series of injuries which meant his last Manchester United appearance in December 2021 was his final one.

Mengi has been out of the world since leaving United and has played nearly every minute for Luton, with Mount quite the opposite since entering Manchester.

The difference between Mason Mount and Teden Mengi

Luton Town spends absolutely nothing on their wages, which is reflected in Mengi’s. He earns just £17,000 p/w. Mount on the other hand earns a whopping £250,000 p/w.

Mengi has played 1221 minutes, whereas Mount has played a measly 401 minutes. You see where I’m going with this.

The transfer fees must have also varied massively. It is still unknown as to what Mengi was sold for, but it won’t be anywhere near Mount’s hefty £55m fee.

Erik ten Hag wasn’t to know with Teden Mengi… but Mason Mount

Mengi is a massive anomaly, as Ten Hag didn’t know how he’d be following all these injuries, but we just have to make sure a repeat of this doesn’t happen again.

However, as for Mount, the feeling in the air at the time was that it was a ludicrous deal, which is ringing true.

He does still have time to prove himself in red, which we sincerely hope he does. Otherwise, it seems like a monumental waste of cash once again from United.
