Social media users are having a field day over Magic Johnson’s recent comment about Steph Curry’s mom.
On Thursday, the five-time NBA champion congratulated the Warriors superstar for winning the Magic Johnson Award, an honor bestowed to a player by the Professional Basketball Writers Association who “best combines excellence on the court with cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans,” according to the organization.
Upon congratulating Curry on X, Johnson punctuated his message with a reference to the 36-year-old guard’s mom, Sonya Curry — a nod that bewildered many on the platform.
“By the way @StephenCurry30, I had fun hanging out with your mom last night at the Sparks home opener!” Johnson posted, to which one fan replied, “That last line.. Lord have mercy Magic.”
“Was that last sentence necessary,” another user wrote on X next to two crying emojis.
As the Curry memes rolled on through, users continuously replied to Johnson: “What is that last paragraph.”
The innocent message to Curry was just one of several celebratory posts shared by the Lakers legend over the weekend, as he congratulated the Pacers, Mavericks and Timberwolves on their conference finals berths.
“The NBA has been fantastic throughout these Playoffs! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the games,” Johnson, 64, wrote Saturday.
Johnson, a 12-time NBA All-Star, has been married to wife Cookie since 1991. They have two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren.
Sonya, meanwhile, filed for divorce from Dell Curry in 2021, according to reports.
In addition to Curry, the former pair share son Seth, a guard on the Hornets, and daughter Sydel, who is married to Damion Lee of the Suns.
Dell, 59, spent 16 years in the NBA before retiring in 2002.
He revealed in a 2023 interview with The Charlotte Observer he has since remarried.
