The Shipwreck Lounge is a small coastal home in Namibia that is inspired by shipwrecks and sea creature skeletons

We’ve seen many homes inspired many unusual things but architects keep surprising us creating more and more wonder, which we just can’t take our eyes off. The house we are sharing today is one of those, it’s gonna strike you from the first sight as it’s inspired by ship wrecks.

Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has earned its name for being exactly that. The sands on the northwestern coastline of the country are littered with skeletons of both wildlife, as well as wrecked ships, giving the area a hauntingly beautiful vibe. Amidst these wrecks, lies an establishment known as the Shipwreck Lodge, designed by Nina Maritz and Melanie Van Der Merwe. The lodge rather wonderfully complements the shipwrecks around it, taking inspiration from the dilapidated shipwrecks that surround them. The house looks like damaged hulls of ships from the outside, but present a quaint interior that gives you the feeling of being within a ship too, with its decor style.

There are round windows, which provide much light and the views, much plywood and ropes and of course vintage metal fixtures – all that was used to create a strong feeling of old ships. The entry is geometric and asymmetric to make the house more interesting, there are two sleeping spaces squeezed in the small home. Hanging fabric ᵴtriƥs separate the spaces, which also gives a shipwreck feel to the house. The home has everything necessary for living, so you may come for a weekend or holiday and enjoy the coastal life.

The house is powered by solar energy, with an impressive lounge and sand dunes outside that look almost like waves too, giving you the feeling of sailing on land, with a view of the sprawling Atlantic Ocean not very far from the lodges themselves!
