Moments missed from Chelsea’s defeat against Aston Villa after Malo Gusto was shown a straight red card in the second-half on another frustrating afternoon at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at home to Aston Villa on what was another extremely disappointing afternoon for the Blues. Ollie Watkins’ goal in the 73rd minute was enough to beat the 10-man hosts in west London.

It was a first-half that was very similar to what we have seen from Chelsea in recent weeks. The Blues huffed and puffed but did not have enough to blow the house down.

Nicolas Jackson missed a glorious chance after being fed through by Mykhailo Mudryk. Enzo Fernandez, also, squandered a great opportunity from close-range, shooting over on his left foot. The Argentine perhaps had more time than he initially thought.

The home side thought they took the lead just before the half-time whistle when Axel Disasi headed past Emi Martinez, but the Chelsea defender was marginally offside. It really was what we could call a ‘typical’ first-half for the Blues.

Raheem Sterling was the next man to miss a big chance for Chelsea. Early on in the second-half, the 28-year-old found himself through on goal but could not guide the ball past Martinez.

Chelsea went down to 10 men not long after that when Malo Gusto was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Lucas Digne. Originally Gusto was shown a yellow but the referee was advised by the VAR to go over and have a look at the monitor and then changed his mind.

Then it was Watkins who fired the visitors into the lead on 73 minutes. After seeing his initial shot blocked well by Levi Colwill, the England international was on hand to fire in off the post and hand the three points to Villa.

Jackson embraces Emery

There was a nice moment just before kick-off at Stamford Bridge. Jackson, who was starting his sixth successive Premier League game for the Blues, went over to the Aston Villa dugout to embrace Unai Emery.

Emery was in charge when Villarreal promoted Jackson from their B team into the senior XI. Jackson clearly still has an enormous amount of respect for the Villa boss as he went out of his way to embrace the Spaniard just before the game got underway.

Pochettino left incensed

Mauricio Pochettino was an animated figure on the touchline in the first-half. The Argentine must have become frustrated with his team’s indecision and lack of real composure in front of goal.

But there were other aspects from his side that he did not much like against Villa. In the first period, Levi Colwill had the ball in the left-back position and Mudryk was in loads of space down the line.

Colwill, however, instead opted to move the ball into the middle of the pitch and Chelsea ended up losing it. Pochettino, when Colwill had the ball, was pointing down the line to Mudryk and was then left with his head in his hands afterwards. Not a happy man.
