Manchester United given injury boost after Mason Mount is pictured back in individual training on grass for the first time since November

Mason Mount has handed Manchester United another boost after he began training on the grass at Carrington again on Wednesday.

Mount has missed the last nine games since suffering a calf injury five weeks ago, but it’s hoped that the England international could return to action early in the New Year as he follows an individual training programme.

The 24-year-old has struggled since joining United from Chelsea for £60million in the summer, registering just one assist and no goals in 12 games for his new club.

Mount’s problems have been typical of United’s attack this season, but Erik ten Hag‘s side came to life in the second half of the Boxing Day win over Aston Villa when Rasmus Hojlund snatched the winner with his first Premier League goal for the club, Alejandro Garnacho scored twice and Marcus Rashford was back on form.

Hojlund dismissed suggestions that a weight had been lifted off his shoulders, saying: ‘Not at all. You could see the relief in my celebration, but also the feeling of being the match winner and getting the three points at home against a good opponent. I’m a lucky and happy man.’

The England international conducted individual training while his team-mates recovered

The 24-year-old has no goals and one assist for United in his first 12 appearances since signing

Mount completed his training individually in the rain on Wednesday morning as the rest of his team-mates completed a recovery session from their dramatic comeback win over Aston Villa.

He will be hoping to really kickstart his career at Old Trafford after a disappointing start to life in red.

Ten Hag seems to be confident in his abilities and said in October: ‘I think in every game, our game would benefit from Mason Mount,

‘I don’t have any concern to line him up. He did come on in a lot of games, he started in a lot of games.’

United fans could get a further boost with some of their injured players in line to return at some point in January.

United also expect Amad Diallo, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Victor Lindelof and Casemiro back in the coming weeks.
