Squid Game season 2 creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and Gi-hun actor Lee Jung-jae tease the lethal new games that will feature in the sophomore outing. Releasing on Netflix in 2021, the thriller series quickly became one of the streamer’s most popular originals of all time, telling the story of Gi-hun and his involvement in a deadly series of challenges for a cash prize. Squid Game season 2 is now confirmed to release later this year, continuing Gi-hun’s story and introducing a new incarnation of the titular games.
Squid Game season 1 was a global phenomenon, and it’s clear that, with season 2, Hwang is attempting to recapture what made that debut outing such a hit while also pushing the story forward. Season 1, for example, currently has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and stands as Netflix’s most-watched series debut of all time with 1.65 billion minutes watched in its first four weeks on the service. Including a new iteration of the Game means that much of what made season 1 such a hit will return in season 2.
