The man who saved Anne Hathaway’s career

Actress Anne Hathaway said she was once turned away by all of Hollywood and was not invited to act in any movies.

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Anne Hathaway recounted the difficult time when many directors and producers avoided her and did not dare to invite her to act in films. At that time, the actress had just won her first Oscar in her career for her supporting role in Les Miserables (2012). However, when she searched online for the new milestone in her career, the top result she found was an article with the title: “Why do people hate Anne Hathaway?”.

Anne Hathaway recently made headlines with the romantic drama The Idea Of You.

She said: “A lot of people turned down offers to act in films because my online reputation was so negative at the time. That humiliation was hard to swallow. The important thing is that you don’t let that get close to your life. You have to keep your courage. It’s very difficult because I told myself that if I choose the safe option, keep the peace, hide myself so as not to attract too much attention, it will be less painful. But if you choose that way, you can’t be an actress. You have to be a tightrope walker, a daredevil.”

In 2013, despite winning the Oscar, Anne Hathaway was harshly criticized for her insincere and emotionless speech. There were sources saying that the actress had rehearsed her speech before attending the awards ceremony. And everything went as predicted, she walked up to the podium with the words she had written at home. The outfit the actress chose to attend the event also caused a lot of controversy, being criticized by many people as revealing and offensive.

Then, a protest movement against Anne Hathaway exploded on social media called “Hathahaters”. Many colleagues in Hollywood commented that the actress, who has long been known in the industry as a “fake, dramatic person”. Veteran actor Richard Lawson frankly shared in an interview: “She always looks like she’s acting. I’ve been in contact with theater kids all my life. I was one of them. Anne is a typical example of a bad theater kid (a phrase referring to actors who have a condescending attitude, looking down on other positions in the film crew)”.

Anne Hathaway also revealed that director Christopher Nolan – who had just won a big Oscar award in early March – had saved her career at that time. “He was like an angel, ignoring all the criticism and giving me one of the best roles of my career. I really don’t know if Nolan was intentionally supporting me. But it had that effect. And my career could have been ruined without that help.”

The role Anne Hathaway is referring to is the scientist Amelia Brand in the sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar (2014). Previously, she and the director also collaborated on The Dark Knight Rises – a film in the Batman trilogy directed by Nolan.

Before Interstellar, Anne Hathaway collaborated with Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises.
