Anne Hathaway tips hat to Showgirls by joking ‘It’s Versayse’ as she models Versace dress on Today show

Anne Hathaway slid her enviably svelte frame into a colorful Versace suit as she swung by the Today show this week.

The 39-year-old opted for an outfit that offered a psychedelic take on the classic 1930s skirt suit pioneered by Coco Chanel.

She posted a snap of the look to her Instagram page and quoted the 1995 camp classic movie Showgirls: ‘It’s Versayse.’

The line is uttered by Elizabeth Berkley’s character Nomi Malone, who starts off as a low-paid ᵴtriƥper and rises to become a Las Vegas star.

In one scene Nomi proudly flounces into an office and is complimented on her new dress, prompting her to chirp: ‘Thanks! I bought it at Versayse!’

The people in the office look at her blankly until she adds: ‘In the Forum?’ meaning the famous shopping drag in Caesars Palace.

While some characters humor her by going along with her mispronunciation, her love interest played by Kyle MacLachlan eventually puts her right.

Showgirls was directed by Paul Verhoeven from a script by Joe Eszterhas, a team who had previously collaborated on the hit erotic thriller Basic Instinct.

The script at the time was the most expensive ever sold – a sale that became infamous after the film was savaged by the critics and tanked at the box office.

Although the movie was a commercial bomb in theaters, hemmed in partly by its NC-17 rating, it wound up being a smash on home video.

Showgirls rapidly became a cult favorite thanks in part to Elizabeth’s over-the-top performance as ᵴtriƥper Nomi Malone and to such ridiculous lines as the character claiming she ‘used to love Doggy Chow’ in a memorable scene with Gina Gershon.

While chatting with Hoda Kotb, Anne candidly discussed her co-star Jared Leto’s famously extreme approach to Method acting.

She dished that Jared remained in character both on and off camera throughout the six months that they spent filming the miniseries.

‘I’ve never seen anything like it,’ said Anne, adding that ‘I was fascinated by his process’ and ‘receptive’ to the way he worked.

Looking back: While chatting with Hoda Kotb, Anne candidly discussed her co-star Jared Leto’s famously extreme approach to Method acting

She explained that ‘especially in a story like the one we’re telling where we’re playing two people wildly in love, we had to build a certain connection and culture between us, and so if that’s what worked for him, then it worked for me.’

When discussing ‘practical’ matters about scenes, Anne and Jared still referred to each other by their characters’ ‘pet names’ for one another.

Anne gushed that ‘we just opened to each other,’ adding that ‘it was such a beautiful experience, I have to say. I was really inspired working with him.’
