David de Gea increasingly likely to leave Manchester United as free agent

Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea is out of contract at the end of the month and is yet to sign a new deal.

David de Gea is increasingly likely to leave Manchester United this summer as talks continue over his future.

The 32-year-old is technically out of contract in two weeks but was not named as one of the seven players set to be released by the club when their contracts expire.

David de Gea is yet to agree to a new United deal

United announced their retained list on Friday afternoon and, in it, De Gea was categorised as one of the players currently under contract, despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Following the release of the retained list, United stated that ‘discussions remain open’ with the Spaniard ‘over a potential new contract.’

It was initially believed that the terms of a new agreement were roughly in place, but an extension has yet to be signed as United explore their options.

Erik ten Hag has said he wants to keep the experienced shot-stopper, but he has offered no assurances that he will remain No. 1 into next season and beyond.

The Manchester Evening News understands that the situation is not currently as positive as it was previously, and De Gea is now increasingly likely to leave the club.

Club sources have reiterated that discussions are ongoing with the goalkeeper regarding a contract extension, but there is not currently a firm offer in place. United remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached.

United are interested in Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a back-up option, but the 20-year-old is now close to a move to Brighton because he wants to play regular football.

If De Gea does depart, then a more experienced first-choice will be required. United have been linked with both Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa.

United have triggered one-year extensions for backup ‘keepers Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop amid continued uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping department.
