Man United are the frontrunners for Mount’s signature but have reached an impasse with Chelsea, leaving hope for Bayern Munich to swoop in and cut a deal
Bayern Munich hope to capitalise on Manchester United’s stalled pursuit of Mason Mount by stepping up their interest in the Chelsea midfielder, according to reports.
Mount’s summer exit from Stamford Bridge has looked increasingly likely in recent weeks, with the 24-year-old entering the final year of his contract. Talks over a new deal had been ongoing for months but showed almost no progress, with Chelsea now resigned to losing their man.
United were among several interested sides, but put themselves in the driving seat by agreeing personal terms with Mount in May. However they have reached an impasse regarding the fee, having seen three bids – the most recent worth £55million – knocked back by Chelsea.
And now the Guardian reports that Bayern will look to swoop in and cut a deal, with Thomas Tuchel the main driver behind their interest, having worked with Mount at Stamford Bridge. The report adds that Chelsea may be willing to accept a lower fee for a foreign club who will not be challenging them for a top-four place next season.
Elsewhere, Spanish outlet El Nacional have named Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as a surprise target for United, should David De Gea leave the club.
Current first-choice De Gea will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the month, with Reds boss Erik ten Hag keen to replace the 32-year-old with someone more suited to his style. Several shot-stoppers have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, including Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and David Raya of Brentford.
However this most recent report suggests Ten Hag and United are ‘willing to try their luck’ with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez with a €90million offer for Courtois. The 31-year-old has been in the Spanish capital since 2018 and was named in both the LaLiga Team of the Season and FIFPRO World-XI in 2022.
