Angelina Jolie stars in biopic about Opera singer Maria Callas

Angelina Jolie will star in director Pablo Larraín’s next film, a biopic about famous opera singer Maria Callas.

Titled Maria, according to the introduction, the film will “tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest female opera singer, relived and re-imagined in the days of her last in Paris in the 1970s”.

The film is written by Steven Knight – who has written scripts for the films Spencer, Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises…

Callas is a Greek-American singer and one of the most famous opera singers of the 20th century. She was 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 in Manhattan and trained in opera in Greece at the age of 13 and later moved to Italy to establish her career. . Over the years, she has been dealing with nearsightedness that left her almost blind and also brought a lot of notoriety in her personal and professional life.

During her artistic career, Callas had a fierce rivalry with Italian opera singer Renata Tebaldi, plus a romantic relationship with Aristotle Onassis (who later married Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis).

Director Larraín said of his film project: “Having the opportunity to combine two of my deepest and most personal passions, cinema and opera, is a dream I’ve been waiting for a long time.

And to do it. this for Angelina, who is an incredibly brave and inquisitive artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A real gift.”

“I take the responsibility for Maria’s life and legacy very seriously,” continued Pablo Larraín. “I will give everything I can to meet the challenge.”

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie said of the collaboration with Pablo Larraín: “Pablo Larraín is a director that I have long admired. Allowed the opportunity to tell more of Maria’s story to him with a screenplay by Steven. Knight is a dream.”

Larraín’s two previous biopics, last year’s Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, and 2016’s Jackie with Natalie Portman as Kennedy Onassis, both earned Best Actress nominations for the main female role of the film.

The acclaimed director also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film for his 2012 Chilean historical drama No.
