Angelina Jolie’s adoption of her son Maddox from an orphanage in Cambodia in 2002 was a life-changing decision.
Despite the lengthy adoption process and many obstacles, Angelina and Maddox’s dream mother-daughter relationship has been an inspiration to many. Here’s an overview of their journey.
When Angelina first came to Cambodia, she told herself, “My son is here.”
Angelina always knew she wanted to adopt. “When I was very young and I heard about what an orphanage was, I was anxious to find abandoned 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren to bring back to live with me and make a real home.”
Angelina Jolie’s journey to adopt Maddox was not an easy one because she had to go through a series of complicated legal procedures.
The actress wanted to adopt a 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 in Cambodia when she was filming Tomb Raider here. When she visited an orphanage in Cambodia, the staff placed Maddox, formerly known as Rath Vibol, in her arms and the boy was still asleep. Then the boy opened his eyes and laughed, and she cried. Jolie says she feels like, “This 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 feels absolutely fine with me in my arms.”
Maddox changed Angelina’s life
Before becoming a mother, Angelina used to be easily depressed or self-destructive.
In 2005, Maddox became Zahara’s big brother, and in 2007 Pax. Jolie then welcomed her three 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren with ex-husband Brad Pitt, Shiloh, in 2006, and twins Vivienne and Knox two years later.
In the Jolie family, adoption and orphanages are positive
In the actress’s family, adoption and orphanages are valued. Angelina said all adopted 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren are a beautiful mystery that enters people’s lives and that: “They have origins you don’t have. Honor them. It is the greatest journey to share. They’re not entering your world, you’re entering each other’s world,” she added.
Angelina incorporates Maddox’s cultural background into the educational process
Jolie bought a house in Cambodia for Maddox, and also frequented the place where he was 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧. In addition, she founded the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which focuses on conserving the Asian nation’s environment, education, health and infrastructure.
Over the years, Maddox, now 21, has become a versatile young man with a variety of interests. In 2019, he enrolled in a college in South Korea to pursue his passion for biotechnology. He also became his mother’s right-hand man in the entertainment industry, acting as an executive producer on Jolie’s critically acclaimed film First They Killed My Father.
Maddox played a key role in encouraging Angelina to work on the project and the mother-daughter duo continued to collaborate on creative endeavors. Angelina often praises Maddox’s natural talent.
Angelina Jolie does not believe that she is a perfect mother. However, this mother of six tries to accept her 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren for who they are and is always there to support and develop all the different sides of them.
