Mason Mount reveals how Erik ten Hag convinced him to ditch Chelsea for Man Utd

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea, who has penned a deal valid until June 2028, with the option of a further year.

Erik ten Hag has made improving his midfield one of his priorities and after weeks of negotiating with the Blues, he has finally got his man.

Man Utd eventually agreed on a £55m transfer fee with Chelsea. This came after Mount repeatedly refused to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, which effectively forced Mauricio Pochettino to sell him.

During his time at Chelsea, the 24-year-old made 195 appearances across all competitions, scoring 33 goals and making 37 assists.

Under Thomas Tuchel, Mount played a key role as the London club went on to win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool were initially thought to be the favourites to sign the midfielder. However, in recent weeks, Mount has looked set to join the Red Devils.

Now, Man Utd have officially announced his arrival in a club statement and it’s fair to say Mount is very excited about the move. Also, it has been revealed that he will wear the number seven shirt.

Mount hails Ten Hag influence on Man Utd

In an interview with the official Man Utd website, Mason Mount said: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career.

“Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead and am ready for the hard work expected here.

“I am hugely ambitious and I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”

Last season, Man Utd won their first trophy since 2017 by winning the League Cup. Now, Mount will be keen to continue that resurgence that has been led by Ten Hag.

Murtough: ‘Mason is world-class’

Manchester United’s Director of Football also gave his thoughts on Mount’s arrival at Old Trafford.

“Mason is an extremely intelligent footballer. He has so many fantastic technical qualities that will significantly add to our squad,” he said.

“We have admired his talents for a long time. So, we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford.

“His style of play and attributes are a perfect fit for this squad, and we all believe that he will only improve further working with Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

“Mason himself is a world-class player. But, he also has the ability to improve the players around him through his game intelligence and tactical awareness.“

“We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond.”
