The white-throated kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis ), which is also known as the white-breasted kingfisher, is a species of tree kingfisher that is widely distributed in Asia. Its range extends from the Sinai in the west, to China and Indonesia in the east, covering the Indian subcontinent in between. This beautiful bird is a resident throughout much of its range, although some populations may migrate short distances.
Interestingly, the white-throated kingfisher can often be found far away from water. It feeds on a diverse range of prey, including small reptiles, amphibians, crabs, small rodents, and even birds. Its adaptability in finding food is truly impressive and it makes for a fascinating creature to observe in the wild.
During the breeding season, these birds emit loud calls in the mornings. They can be heard from prominent perches, including the tops of buildings in urban areas or on wires. It’s a beautiful bird that is always a treat to see.
