As the NBA Finals draw nearer and nearer, this also symbolizes the advancement toward one of the most entertaining times during the NBA offseason. I am speaking, of course, about NBA free agency. The free agency period in the NBA is fast-moving and hard-hitting, which has fans raving to their phones to turn on Twitter notifications from Shams and Woj so they can be the first to know when big news drops. Before all of this madness ensues, we decided to come up with a comprehensive guide for all things 2023 NBA free agency.
Jeff Bezos Is Engaged to Lauren Sánchez
Below, you will see every NBA player headed toward free agency this season from every NBA team. Not only will we break down the unrestricted free agents but the players who have team options, player options, and qualifying offers as well. Then, considering the circumstances surrounding each player and franchise, we will break down what we will predict will happen with all of these players as free agency and time go on. There is no better way to get prepared for NBA free agency than this list right here, so let’s dive in.
This is the full list of 2023 free agents from every NBA team.
Atlanta Hawks
Aaron Holiday
Jarrett Culver
Derrick Favors
Trent Forrest (Qualifying Offer)
Donovan Williams (Qualifying Offer)
The Atlanta Hawks do not have a make-or-break free agency period ahead of them in 2023 when it comes to their own free agents. Of course, the team will try to improve after another first-round exit in this year’s playoffs at the hands of the Boston Celtics and a regular season in which they finished 41-41. One of their only unrestricted free agents is Aaron Holiday, who appeared in a bench role for most of 2022-23 and averaged 3.9 PPG and 1.4 APG on the season. Chances are Atlanta will let him walk if he so chooses.
As for the remaining four free agents, their time in Atlanta will likely come to an end as well. Jarrett Culver appeared in just 10 games for the Hawks this season, and Derrick Favors appeared in none. As for their two restricted free agents, I expect them to sign qualifying offers with other teams which Atlanta will gladly not match in order to bring close to $3 million off their payroll. The Hawks will be active come this free agency period, but it will be from outside the organization and not within.
Boston Celtics
Blake Griffin
Danilo Gallinari (Player Option)
Payton Pritchard (Team Option)
Mike Muscala (Team Option)
Grant Williams (Qualifying Offer)
JD Davison (Qualifying Offer)
Mfiondu Kabengele (Qualifying Offer)
Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics have some big decisions to be made this offseason. Most likely, the team will let Blake Griffin look for employment elsewhere after a 2023 season that saw him play just 41 games and average 4.1 PPG and 3.8 RPG. Danilo Gallinari will most likely opt-in to his player option worth $6.8 million after suffering a knee injury that cost him the entire 2022-23 season as well.
This leaves us with the players who have team options and qualifying offers to consider. The team will let Mike Muscala walk, I am sure, but the case is more complicated when it comes to Payton Pritchard. He is a fan-favorite and beloved by teammates but has done little to help the team as far as advancing toward an NBA championship. I am willing to bet they let him walk as well. Grant Williams is likely to decline any qualifying offer extended by the Celtics in search of a more lucrative contract despite a disappointing 2023 playoffs.
Brooklyn Nets
Seth Curry
Yuta Watanabe
Dru Smith
Moses Brown
Nerlens Noel
Cameron Johnson (Qualifying Offer)
David Duke (Qualifying Offer)
After a tumultuous 2022-23 season that saw their roster flipped upside down with a bunch of moving parts, the Brooklyn Nets have a lot of work to do this offseason. They have five unrestricted free agents coming off their books, with the chances being that only Seth Curry and Yuta Watanabe will get offers from Brooklyn. Curry finished his second season with Brooklyn playing 61 games and averaging 9.2 PPG. He will most likely look to go elsewhere after a rocky career with the Nets amid drama and roster construction. As for Watanabe, he showed that he can be an efficient piece off the bench, especially from beyond the arc. However, I did predict that he would be one of the most overpaid free agents this summer because of that, and I do not believe it will be the Nets fronting the bill.
The Nets will also have two qualifying offers they would need to extend if they wish. Cameron Johnson is the big name that the Nets would like to retain as one of the key return pieces in the deal that sent Kevin Durant to Phoenix. Johnson stepped in and averaged 16.6 PPG through 25 games for Brooklyn, making him the name to watch for them this offseason. As for David Duke, I believe the Nets are through with him after a lifeless 2022-23 that saw him play just 23 games off the bench.
Charlotte Hornets
Kelly Oubre Jr.
Dennis Smith Jr.
Svi Mykhailiuk
P.J. Washington (Qualifying Offer)
Theo Maledon (Qualifying Offer)
The Charlotte Hornets have a very intriguing and interesting offseason ahead of them this summer. They have money coming off the books in the form of Reggie Jackson and Nicolas Batum’s contracts as their commitment to them is done and they are playing elsewhere anyway. Their unrestricted free agents are compelling in that Kelly Oubre Jr. is coming off a 20.0 PPG season in which he played 48 games. Most likely, Charlotte will not fight to keep him. As for Dennis Smith Jr., he may draw interest from other teams due to his showing as a valuable bench piece this year and Charlotte will not match anything out of their price range.
As for their qualifying offers, there is only one that I see the Hornets extending. P.J. Washington is coming off the best season of his young career averaging 15.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 1.1 BPG in 73 starts for Charlotte in 2022-23. As far as Washington goes, teams will be looking for help on the interior this offseason and he certainly helps fill that void making it a competitive market for him if he declines the offer. I do not know if Charlotte will match any offer extended to him otherwise, but they should if they cannot convince other players to join their organization. An organization that I may note is in the middle of being sold by owner Michael Jordan.
Chicago Bulls
Nikola Vucevic
Ayo Dosunmu
Patrick Beverley
Goran Dragic
Javonte Green
Tony Bradley
Malcolm Hill
Terry Taylor
Andre Drummond (Player Option)
Derrick Jones (Player Option)
Coby White (Qualifying Offer)
Phew! The Chicago Bulls have a lot of work to do come free agency this summer. The first order of business will be to figure out what they would like to do with unrestricted free agent Nikola Vucevic. There will undoubtedly be a market for the big man’s services this summer, and it will be up to the Bulls to convince him to stay. In 2023, he averaged 17.6 PPG and 11.0 RPG in 82 games played for the Bulls, and as much as they would like to keep him, it will cost them just as his defensive deficiencies cost them some games this season. I also expect them to do everything they can to keep young and talented guard Ayo Dosunmu, especially considering the uncertainty of Lonzo Ball’s health.
Andre Drummond and Derrick Jones will likely opt into their player options as well, forcing the Bulls to try and find deals for both of them if they do not wish to pay them this year. This brings us to the curious case of Coby White. There will certainly be interest in White, who just finished his fourth NBA season in a role off the bench for 74 games averaging 9.7 PPG and 2.8 APG. White will sign any qualifying offer extended his way, but the serious question will be if the Bulls offer it or not. This is an unpredictable situation as Chicago has been unwilling to deal White over the last two seasons, setting up for what could be a standoff between the team and White this summer.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Caris LeVert
Robin Lopez
Raul Neto
Danny Green
Lamar Stevens (Team Option)
Dylan Windler (Qualifying Offer)
Mamadi Diakite (Qualifying Offer)
Isaiah Mobley (Qualifying Offer)
At first glance, the Cleveland Cavaliers seem like they have a lot of work to do with their own free agents this summer, but it really isn’t all that complicated. They have four unrestricted free agents, and in the cases of Robin Lopez, Raul, and Danny Green, the decision is fairly clear. Let them walk. The only unrestricted free agent they will fight for is Caris LeVert, who has been a gem for them off the bench over the last two seasons. In 2023, LeVert averaged 12.1 PPG, 3.9 APG, and 1.0 SPG in 74 games played and is sure to draw interest from around the league. Can Cleveland keep him around or will he decide to go elsewhere to compete for an NBA championship and bigger role on a team?
I am willing to bet that they also decline the team option on Lamar Stevens. Despite his services being fairly cheap, Stevens averaged just 5.3 PPG and 3.3 RPH this season for Cleveland in 62 games. I am also willing to bet that they let each of their qualifying offer players sign elsewhere as well. Dylan Windler, Mamadi Diakite, and Isaiah Mobley should all have different homes next season as the Cavaliers look to build on a successful yet disappointing 2023 season.
Dallas Mavericks
Kyrie Irving
Christian Wood
Dwight Powell
Markieff Morris
Frank Ntilikina
Theo Pinson
Tyrell Terry
McKinley Wright (Qualifying Offer)
AJ Lawson (Qualifying Offer)
The Dallas Mavericks have some big fish to fry as they try to recover from a devastating and disappointing 2022-23 season. The biggest fish of all will be their attempt to coerce and convince Kyrie Irving to run it back in the backcourt with Luka Doncic after they brought him over in a deal with the Nets midseason. Irving played great for Dallas, averaging 27.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 6.0 APG in 20 games for them this season, but it is unknown if the team did enough to show Kyrie enough to want to come back for another shot at things.
As for their other unrestricted free agents, it is likely they will sign elsewhere, or Dallas will let them walk. Christian Wood repeatedly rejected Dallas’ offers for an extension and it is likely he will leave due to coach Jason Kidd’s horrendous usage of him this year. Dwight Powell has only known Dallas as home for the last nine seasons, but it is likely they will not retain him with his continued regression on both sides of the ball. It is more than likely Dallas will be very active in free agency and on the trade market, but as for their own free agents, I expect a ton of change this summer for the Mavericks.
Denver Nuggets
Jeff Green
Reggie Jackson
Ishmael Smith
DeAndre Jordan
Thomas Bryant
Collin Gillespie (Qualifying Offer)
Jack White (Qualifying Offer)
As things currently stand, the Denver Nuggets look like they are headed to their first NBA Finals in team history, holding a commanding lead in the Conference Finals over the Lakers. As the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Fortunately for the Nuggets, they do not have any major decision to be made this summer other than one of their unrestricted free agents. Jeff Green has been an unsung hero for the Nuggets this season, and if he helps them win an NBA championship in 2023, mutual interest in a return should be a certainty at this point. As for the others such as Reggie Jackson, Thomas Bryant, and DeAndre Jordan, I would definitely expect Denver to not so much as blink an eye in letting them go.
The same can be said for their two players needing qualifying offers to play elsewhere next season as well. The Nuggets will draw a ton of interest from veterans and young role players alike if they advance to the NBA Finals or win an NBA title this season. That being said, letting their unrestricted and restricted free agents walk seems like their best bet. Besides, they will not be missing too much production from Collin Gillespie and Jack White, if I am to be completely honest.
Detroit Pistons
Hamidou Diallo
Cory Joseph
Rodney McGruder
Braxton Key
Stanley Umude
Alec Burks (Team Option)
James Wiseman (Team Option)
Isaiah Livers (Team Option)
Eugene Omoruyi (Team Option)
Buddy Boeheim (Qualifying Offer)
Jared Rhoden (Qualifying Offer)
Even without the looming free agency, the Detroit Pistons clearly have a lot of work to do to return to their glory days of the 90s and 2000s. The Pistons have not been a competitive team for some time now, making for some interesting decisions to be made this summer. Let’s start with the unrestricted free agents with the only player worth keeping for them is guard/forward hybrid Hamidou Diallo, who has averaged 10.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG for the team over the last two and a half seasons. Diallo should be the only player they even consider bringing back from their unrestricted bunch of players.
This brings us to the team options and qualifying offers. For Detroit, they are likely to exercise their team option on big man James Wisemanwho averaged 12.7 PPG and 8.1 RPG for the Pistons through 24 games played. Alec Burks will likely be allowed to seek employment through free agency, as will the remaining players with a team option and their two players who will need to be signed via qualifying offers as restricted free agents.
Golden State Warriors
JaMychal Green
Lester Quinones
Draymond Green (Player Option)
Donte DiVincenzo (Player Option)
Jonathan Kuminga (Team Option)
Moses Moody (Team Option)
Anthony Lamb (Qualifying Offer)
Ty Jerome (Qualifying Offer)
It is clear from the way their season ended in the second round of the NBA playoffs that the Golden State Warriors have some big decisions to make this offseason. When it comes to unrestricted free agents, the Warriors’ decisions are fairly easy, considering JaMychal Green and Lester Quinones are two players they need to let go. Their biggest decisions will be with Draymond Green and team options on Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga.
Draymond Green can opt into his player option, which will pay him more than $27 million in 2023-24. However, if he opts out, the Warriors will have to decide if they will go for a hefty price tag he is sure to draw from other teams. Green has been their heart and soul for four championship runs, and as Steve Kerr stated, “As long as Draymond is here, we are a title contender.” As for Moody and Kuminga, I am sure they will exercise the team option for Moody, but Kuminga’s status remains unclear. If they deny it, Kuminga will be off to play elsewhere. If they exercise it, he will surely be used as trade capital. Either way, I do not see Kuminga with the team next year after next to no playing time in the playoffs this season.
Houston Rockets
John Wall
Moe Harkless
Boban Marjanovic
Dashien Nix (Team Option)
Darius Days (Qualifying Offer)
Trevor Hudgins (Qualifying Offer)
The Rockets find themselves with more financial freedom in 2023 than they have had in quite some time. They will lose John Wall’s $47.35 million off their books, which is their first step toward bringing in some veterans around one of the youngest teams in the game. They will even lose nearly $30 million off their books in salaries of players that are no longer on the team, such as Danny Green, Theo Maledon, and Ty Jerome.
The plan for Houston after hiring Ime Udoka to take over coaching duties is reportedly to lure James Harden back into town. Of course, there is also reported mutual interest from Harden, and losing Wall’s monster salary allows for that to take place. With their desperate attempts to shed salary in full effect, other cap casualties will include Boban Marjanovic, Dashien Nix, Darius Days, and Trevor Hudgins.
Indiana Pacers
Goga Bitadze
George Hill
James Johnson
Serge Ibaka
Oshae Brissett
Kendall Brown (Qualifying Offer)
The 2022-23 season showed some promise for the Indiana Pacers, especially from their core of Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Myles Turner. Despite the potential, the Pacers finished with a 35-47 record and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. The Pacers are fortunate not to have many decisions facing their team when it comes to their free agents within the organization.
Having already traded Goga Bitadze to the Magic this season, the Pacers are no longer responsible for what happens to the big man from Georgia, although they may bring him back on a cheap deal this summer. It is likely that George Hill and James Johnson will also be able to seek employment freely during the offseason as Indiana has no wishes to resign either veteran. The most interesting, and I use that term loosely, free agent will be Oshae Brissett, who has spent the last three years in Indiana. After a disappointing 2022-23, Brissett will also likely be headed out the door come free agency.
Los Angeles Clippers
Russell Westbrook
Mason Plumlee
Moses Brown
Eric Gordon (Team Option)
Moussa Diabate (Qualifying Offer)
The Los Angeles Clippers are another team facing major decisions for the 2023-24 season as they faced yet another disappointing end to the NBA playoffs this year. Forget about Paul George and Kawhi Leonard’s situation for a moment, and let us focus on their decisions to be made regarding free agents. For one, I think the Clippers would be crazy not to bring back Russell Westbrook, who seemed to mesh well immediately with the team and averaged 23.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 7.4 APG for them during the playoffs. I also believe it would be smart to bring back Mason Plumlee if they can do it for a cheap price.
This may all depend on what they decide to do with Eric Gordon. For one, they could bring him back and it would go as nearly $21 million against their cap. They could also decline their team option and let him walk, which is what I think they do in order to make other moves, such as the one it will take to sign Westbrook. Moussa Diabate is their only player needing a qualifying offer to be signed to leave L.A., which they will undoubtedly not extend to him.
Los Angeles Lakers
Austin Reaves
D’Angelo Russell
Lonnie Walker
Dennis Schroder
Troy Brown
Wenyen Gabriel
Malik Beasley (Team Option)
Rui Hachimura (Qualifying Offer)
Scottie Pippen Jr. (Qualifying Offer)
With the Lakers on the brink of elimination from the NBA playoffs, fans have already begun to see what they can do to improve their championship chances in 2023-24. Their first order of business will be to keep Austin Reaves, their clear third-best player, in town and match any monster offer he is sure to receive. There will definitely be a limit on what they can or will match but are hoping Reaves will want to run it back regardless of money. D’Angelo Russell will be another interesting name to watch with Los Angeles as things have completely fallen apart for him in the Conference Finals against the Nuggets.
Other unrestricted free agents they will want to retain, perhaps are Dennis Schroder and Lonnie Walker, but only if the price is right, as both players have earned big offers with big-time playoff performances this season. As for their qualifying offers, Rui Hachimura is an interesting case. He has played the best basketball of his career in his half-season with the Lakers in 2023, and he fits perfectly into what they are trying to accomplish on the court. I bet they offer him their qualifying offer without hesitation, especially if they lose Reaves and Russell in free agency.
Memphis Grizzlies
Dillon Brooks
Killian Tillie
Xavier Tillman (Team Option)
The Memphis Grizzlies are headed for a whirlwind of chaos heading into the 2023 offseason after a brutal first-round exit in this year’s playoffs, among team drama internally. Without keeping any secrets almost immediately upon their departure from the playoffs, the Grizzlies decided to let it be known that Dillon Brooks would not be back under any circumstances next season. It is clear that his antics and mannerisms have become far too much for them to even handle. This is all occurring while they await a supposed lengthy suspension to star point guard Ja Morant for flashing firearms on social media for the second time in just two months.
In his third season with Memphis, Xavier Tillman had the best season of his young career with 7.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.0 SPG in 61 games played. Tillman is eligible for a team option worth just $1.93 million, and if Memphis was smart, they would exercise it for the depth they will undoubtedly need heading into 2023-24. As it stands, their payroll will be around $139 million without any of these moves, so it could be assumed it will be a quiet offseason in Memphis other than replacing Morant to start the year.
Miami Heat
Max Strus
Gabe Vincent
Kevin Love
Omer Yurtseven
Cody Zeller
Victor Oladipo (Player Option)
Haywood Highsmith (Team Option)
Jamal Cain (Qualifying Offer)
Orlando Robinson (Qualifying Offer)
The Miami Heat is another team on the verge of appearing in the NBA Finals in 2023, holding a commanding lead over the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, as they embark on the quest for an NBA title, there are questions looming for the franchise heading into the offseason. Most likely, Max Strus and Gabe Vincent are guaranteed to return to Miami, especially given their contributions to this amazing playoff run. Kevin Love is another player the Heat could keep as well as long as the price is right and low.
Omer Yurtseven and Cody Zeller will most likely be casualties of the cap this offseason, as will both qualifying offer candidates. Things get interesting when we look at Haywood Highsmith, who will have a team option worth $1.9 million. The Heat will likely exercise that team option and take Highsmith back. Victor Oladipo can also exercise his own $9.45 million player option considering the season-ending injury he suffered in the early stages of the NBA playoffs this season.
Milwaukee Bucks
Brook Lopez
Jae Crowder
Joe Ingles
Wesley Matthews
Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Khris Middleton (Player Option)
Jevon Carter (Player Option)
AJ Green (Qualifying Offer)
After an unceremonious exit from the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks will look to retool their roster this offseason starting with a search for a head coach. First and foremost will be to re-sign Defensive Player of the Year Finalist Brook Lopez. He has been a welcomed addition over the last few seasons to the team and is one of the anchors of their interior defense. Jae Crowder, Joe Ingles, and Wesley Matthews will all be let go as unrestricted free agents.
As for the player options, the big fish to take care of is Khris Middleton. His option is worth just north of $40 million, which he would not be able to gain in the open market. This will either force Milwaukee to live with the decision as he gets healthier and take a gamble or try feverishly to find a trade partner to take on that cap hit. Jevon Carter will likely exercise his player option as well, which is worth $2.24 million.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Austin Rivers
Bryn Forbes
Jaylen Nowell
Naz Reid
Nathan Knight (Team Option)
Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Qualifying Offer)
Luka Garza (Qualifying Offer)
Matt Ryan (Qualifying Offer)
After once again falling in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves head back to the drawing board this summer. With rumors swirling of a Karl-Anthony Towns trade, there are other roster moves for Minnesota to consider. The only unrestricted free agent that Minnesota could look to retain is guard Jaylen Nowell as a decent depth piece for their roster. Nowell averaged a career-high 10.8 PPG in 2022-23.
There is also one interesting qualifying offer that the Timberwolves will have to think about. Nickeil Alexander-Walker averaged just 5.9 PPG in 23 appearances for Minnesota this season, so it becomes likely, to me anyway, that any offer sheet will not be matched. The casualties to free agency this season for the Timberwolves will be Austin Rivers, Naz Reid, and Bryn Forbes, with Minnesota also likely to decline the team option on Nathan Knight.
New Orleans Pelicans
Josh Richardson
Herb Jones (Team Option)
Garrett Temple (Team Option)
Willy Hernangomez (Team Option)
Naji Marshall (Team Option)
Jose Alvarado (Team Option)
Jaxson Hayes (Qualifying Offer)
Once again, the New Orleans Pelicans caught the injury bug in 2022-23, leading to a disappointing season that started with huge expectations. Their only unrestricted free agent headed into the summer is Josh Richardson, who they acquired via trade during the year. The Pelicans will most likely go down in those sweepstakes without a fight, as they will not wish to retain him after a quiet 20-game stretch.
The big wins for the Pelicans this offseason will be the team options they can exercise for young stars Jose Alvarado and Herb Jones. Both players have had a significant impact on the defensive end for New Orleans, and they will be able to keep them for at least one more season on the cheap. Herb Jones’ option will cost New Orleans just $1.84 million, and Alvarado’s will cost the same. To be able to keep two great young players for less than $4 million will allow the Pelicans to pursue other players to round out their roster.
New York Knicks
Josh Hart (Player Option)
Derrick Rose (Team Option)
Miles McBride (Team Option)
The New York Knicks do not have a lot of money coming off their books this offseason but made some noise with their current roster these past playoffs. Josh Hart came over in a midseason trade and was very clearly happy to be a part of things in New York. He averaged 10.2 PPG and 7.0 RPG in 25 games with the Knicks during the regular season and 10.4 PPG and 7.4 RPG in the playoffs. Hart will definitely take his player option this offseason and earn $12.96 million with the Knicks in 2023-24.
As for the player options, there is only one that most NBA fans will be watching. Of course, we all know about Tom Thibodeau’s soft spot for Derrick Rose ever since he left him in a little too long and Rose tore his ACL, forever changing his career. If the Knicks decline Rose’s option, it will save them $15.6 million toward the cap next season. However, if Thibs really cares about Rose, they will allow him to seek out a contract with a contender in order to chase an NBA title. Although, a nice consolation for Rose would be that near-$16 million.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Dario Saric
David Nwaba (Team Option)
Lindy Water III (Team Option)
The Oklahoma City Thunder is one of those teams in the NBA that are in a tremendous position for the future. First, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the league’s brightest young stars coming off a season in which he averaged 31.4 PPG and earned his first All-Star and All-NBA First Team selection. The Thunder also have a bevy of draft picks, along with their first-round pick from last season, Chet Holmgren, set to make his debut after missing the entire 2022-23 season.
The moves that the Thunder need to make this summer are very few. Lindy Waters III and David Nwaba are their only pending team option free agents for next season, and likely, both are to be denied. Both players do not align with what the team is trying to do in the future, and that is to build on a play-in berth in 2022-23. The same can be said for big man Dario Saric. He will also most likely be allowed to walk as an unrestricted free agent.
Orlando Magic
Moritz Wagner
Goga Bitadze (Team Option)
Michael Carter-Williams (Team Option)
Admiral Schofield (Team Option)
The Orlando Magic is yet another very young team with a lot of promise heading into the future. The Magic have very limited moves to be made in-house this summer which starts with their only unrestricted free agent, Mo Wagner. Brother of star forward Franz Wagner, Mo has been with the Magic for two seasons and has averaged 9.8 PPG and 4.5 RPG in 131 games played for them during that time. I would be willing to gather that Wagner will take whatever deal he can get to remain in Orlando with his brother and see through on their promise as a young roster.
As for their team options, I believe that Orlando will decline them all. Goga Bitadze is a great depth piece but is not productive enough for what Orlando is trying to do. Michael Carter-Williams played just four games for the Magic this season and saw a total of 44 minutes of action. Admiral Schofield is another player who saw limited action on the court for Orlando and will most likely be cut loose when free agency opens up.
Philadelphia 76ers
Georges Niang
Shake Milton
Jalen McDaniels
Paul Reed
James Harden (Player Option)
Danuel House (Player Option)
Montrezl Harrell (Player Option)
Mac McClung (Qualifying Offer)
Louis King (Qualifying Offer)
The Philadelphia 76ers’ 2022-23 season came to a horrifying yet familiar end in the second round of the 2023 NBA playoffs. This resulted in some avalanche moves that have already begun to ring in a new era in Philadelphia. Doc Rivers is out as head coach, and James Harden will reportedly decline his $35.64 million player option to become a free agent. It has been reported that Harden will fetch $200 million on his next contract in free agency, so his time with Philadelphia should be considered all but over. As for star big man and MVP Joel Embiid, the massive changes have sparked rumors of his departure from Philadelphia as well, although those rumors are just speculation at this point.
As for the moves that will need immediate attention, there are a few to consider. Georges Niang is all but out of Sixers country as well, having voiced his plan to leave earlier in the season and with no retraction of his statement. Paul Reed and Shake Milton are also unrestricted free agents who will seek bigger deals than what the 76ers have in their plans. I also have reason to believe, as you all should, that Montrezl Harrell and Danuel House will both exercise their play options for a total of $7 million as well.
Phoenix Suns
Torrey Craig
TJ Warren
Josh Okogie
Bismack Biyombo
Jock Landale
Terrence Ross
Ismail Wainwright (Team Option)
Darius Bazley (Qualifying Offer)
Saben Lee (Qualifying Offer)
The Phoenix Suns have a lot of work to do this summer as they look to build around the duo of Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. It has already been reported heavily that Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton will be shopped this summer in a trade deal, freeing up just over $63 million in cap space. Some of that money will likely be used to retain just a few free agents from last year’s team. Jock Landale, Torrey Craig, and Josh Okogie are likely to draw interest from Phoenix and elsewhere.
Veterans Terrence Ross, Bismack Biyombo, and TJ Warren will find homes in different areas of the NBA in free agency. The Suns will also not extend a qualifying offer to and be unlikely candidates for matching any offer sheet for Darius Bazley as he hardly had any opportunity to integrate into their system this year. The Suns’ first order of business before all of this is finding the right coach to build this roster around Booker and Durant. The team fired Monty Williams after another blowout loss in Game 7 of the second round in the 2023 playoffs to the Denver Nuggets.
Portland Trail Blazers
Jerami Grant
Justise Winslow
Drew Eubanks
Ryan Arcidiacono
Kevin Knox II (Team Option)
Cam Reddish (Qualifying Offer)
Matisse Thybulle (Qualifying Offer)
Nassir Little (Qualifying Offer)
Ibou Badji (Qualifying Offer)
John Butler Jr. (Qualifying Offer)
The Portland Trail Blazers are in a more dire situation than they have ever been since Damian Lillard was drafted 11 years ago. Lillard has been more vocal than ever about his situation in Portland and has made it clear he wants to win now. This is important for their offseason plans as they find themselves armed with the third pick in the NBA Draft as well. First, unrestricted free agent Jerami Grant is expected to re-sign with Portland but could be stolen away with a higher price tag. Other unrestricted free agents for Portland include Dre Eubanks, Ryan Arcidiacono, and Justise Winslow, who I assume will be playing their basketball elsewhere in 2023-24.
The team will most likely shed $3 million as well by declining Kevin Knox’s team option before getting into their restricted free agents and possibly matching offer sheets. I think Portland will extend qualifying offers to Matisse Thybulle and Nassir Little in order to keep them in Portland but will be hesitant and wait to see what happens with Cam Reddish and let him hit the open market. The Trail Blazers would be off to a great start in their offseason with these moves and be on their way to keeping Lillard happy to stay with the only NBA team he has ever known.
Sacramento Kings
Harrison Barnes
Terence Davis
Alex Len
Chimezie Metu
Trey Lyles
Matthew Dellavedova
Kessler Edwards (Team Option)
Neemias Queta (Qualifying Offer)
Keon Ellis (Qualifying Offer)
Basketball is back in Sacramento and NBA fans are fired up about it. The Kings snapped their 17-year-long playoff drought in 2023, led by the dynamic duo of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. Heading into the 2023 offseason, the Kings have just minimal decisions to make about their roster and personnel. Harrison Barnes has remained adamant that he wants to return to the Kings while Trey Lyles is hoping for the same. The team holds their fates in their hands. The other unrestricted free agents include Alex Len, Chimezie Metu, Matthew Dellavedova, and Terence Davis, who will likely be free to find employment with someone else.
The team also holds an option on who did not impress too much in his 22 games with the Kings in 2022-23. As for their qualifying offers, the Kings are likely to let Neemias Queta and Keon Ellis hit the open market without extending any offer. The Kings are in a great spot for years to come and are hoping to attract some serious talent to their already contending squad.
San Antonio Spurs
Keita Bates-Diop
Tre Jones
Romeo Langford (Qualifying Offer)
Julian Champagnie (Qualifying Offer)
Sandro Mamukelashvili (Qualifying Offer)
Dominick Barlow (Qualifying Offer)
The San Antonio Spurs are still flying high from receiving the number-one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and the rights to phenom Victor Wembanyama with the pick. This means that all plans moving forward will revolve around building the best possible team around Wembanyama and pursuing an NBA championship as soon as possible. That being said, the only unrestricted free agent the Spurs will pursue from their own batch is Tre Jones, who has been impressive over the last few seasons with San Antonio. In 68 games with the Spurs in 2022-23, he averaged 12.9 PPG and 6.6 APG with less than 2.0 turnovers to lead their offense.
As for things with their restricted free agents, it is likely they will forgo offering any in lieu of the pursuit of unrestricted free agents on the market. The Spurs will likely try to use the inevitable arrival of Wembanyama to attract some big names who are intrigued by playing with the French star. By not extending qualifying offers to Romeo Langford and Julian Champagnie, among others, the dominoes begin to fall in place. Those moves would net the Spurs just over $10 million in cap room to go out and get things done for their new franchise cornerstone.
Toronto Raptors
Jakob Poeltl
Dalano Banton
Juan Hernangomez
Will Barton
Fred VanVleet (Player Option)
Gary Trent Jr. (Player Option)
Jeff Dowtin (Qualifying Offer)
Ron Harper Jr. (Qualifying Offer)
Just four seasons removed from their first NBA championship in franchise history, the Toronto Raptors are heading into a pivotal offseason. They have already dismissed coach Nick Nurse and are seeking their next head coach at this time. Rumors have swirled surrounding their willingness to deal star forward Pascal Siakam as well as Fred VanVleet, who will certainly opt into his %22.8 million player option, and Gary Trent Jr. and his $18.56 million player option. Of course, the new Toronto regime to make those decisions.
Unrestricted free agent Jakob Poeltl is expected to be back with the Raptors, but Will Barton and Juan Hernangomez will be looking for new homes. Dalano Banton impressed in his 2022-23 campaign and will likely be back with the Raptors for the right price. The Raptors could look completely different in 2023-24 as they try to get back to their championship-winning ways.
Utah Jazz
Udoka Azubuike
Juan Toscano-Anderson
Jordan Clarkson (Player Option)
Rudy Gay (Player Option)
Talen Horton-Tucker (Player Option)
Damian Jones (Player Option)
Johnny Juzang (Qualifying Offer)
After a decent showing for a team clearly rebuilding in 2022-23, the Utah Jazz have some major moves to think about heading into this offseason. Most likely, Udoka Azubuike and Juan Toscano-Anderson will not be back with Utah as Unrestricted free agents. The real interesting moves will come from players exercising their player options.
Jordan Clarkson’s player option is worth $14.26 million, but he could command a bigger deal considering he has been one of the best bench players in basketball over the last four seasons. Talen Horton-Tucker’s option is worth $11 million, which he will undoubtedly opt into, but just as fast, Utah will try to deal him away. Rudy Gay will also try to exercise his $6.5 million player option, another one that Utah will try to offload somewhere else. The Jazz will perhaps try to retain Clarkson only but will likely try to find the best deal available.
Washington Wizards
Kendrick Nunn
Taj Gibson
Kyle Kuzma (Player Option)
Kristaps Porzingis (Player Option)
Quenton Jackson (Qualifying Offer)
Jay Huff (Qualifying Offer)
After another playoff-less season in 2022-23, the Washington Wizards have some work to do. As for their unrestricted free agents, the Wizards are likely to let Kendrick Nunn and Taj Gibson both walk away without an offer to stay. Gibson is likely headed toward retirement, and Nunn was disappointing in his few games with the Wizards this season. Once again, this will come down to their player options.
Kyle Kuzma is guaranteed to decline his $13 million player option in a search for a more lucrative contract in free agency. The way the market is shaping up, Kuzma will definitely be getting the deal he seeks after a 2023 season that saw him average 21.2 PPG and 7.2 RPG. Kritaps Porzingis is another player with a player option for 2023-24 and will definitely be taking the $36 million that comes with it. Knowing they cannot possibly deal that kind of money away, this is actually a good sign for the Wizards. Porzingis has a resurgent season in 2022-23, averaging 23.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 1.5 BPG in 65 games played
